The USDA defines
"Food Deserts" as a low income census tract where a substantial
number or share of residents has low access to a supermarket or
large grocery store. In Baton Rouge, more detailed analysis
provided by researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Center
has allowed us to move to a more nuanced understanding of areas of
low food access that goes beyond the USDA definition.
